“Do I have to wax when painting with Poppie’s Famous Repurposing Powder™?”
Wax is always on the furniture painter’s mind. I hear constantly from people if it’s really necessary to use it?
I know that people just don’t like to do that extra step. I didn’t either when I first started using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint™ myself a few years ago. Unfortunately, the wax is to chalk paint as grout is to tile. I know I hate to do that too, but once I get started it’s really not that bad and there are absolutely so many advantages to doing it.
I know we all want the fastest fix humanly possible to get our pieces done. Often times we forget that we have already cut out the sanding and priming in most cases and we are looking for that one product that will do it all.
So to answer your question, “Do I have to wax when painting with Poppie’s Famous RePurposing Paint Powder?”
No, you don’t have to wax but you do need some sort of a finish to seal your Chalk Paint™ regardless of the brand.
The purpose of finishing your project with a wax or sealer is to seal the paint. All Chalk Paint™ has minerals in it that change the composition of the paint so that it will do all the cool things that you want it to do.
The minerals allow the paint to adhere to practically anything, sand easily, achieve that great matte finish and all this can be done with sanding and priming. If you don’t seal your painted projects the paint would not give you the durable lasting finish that you desire.
There are ton’s of costly alternative finishes available on the market to apply to your chalk painted piece and many are getting great reviews. I use some of them too. Any of them will work quite well, but there are several advantages to using plain old wax.
1. First is the cost!
There are several waxes available right at your big box home improvement store for less than $10 dollars versus the costly price tags of the waxes being marketed by the various Chalk Paint® companies anywhere up to $40ish. Our companies mission is the get “Real People Painting Real Furniture™” and part of our mission is economical and environmental sustainability.
2. Second is the low toxicity!
There are many natural products that are priced reasonably and have great ingredients in them, like olive oil, mineral oil, carnauba wax, and beeswax. If you are constantly exposing yourself to chemical compounds you are more at risk for lung problems down the road.
3. Lastly, I believe the biggest advantage of using a wax based finish is that it is so forgiving! I can not begin to tell you how many times we have brought our chalk painted pieces back to life that was in horrible shape just by re-waxing.
The new wax cuts through the old and has a way of releasing the yucky stuff when applied. Frequently when we take our chalk painted sample pieces to markets they get rained on, dinged up and chipped in all the wrong places and the wax just restores them as new. This would not be possible if they were painted with latex and then polyurethane. And personally, I have never seen a water-based urethane painted piece that didn’t hold water spots.
If you still aren’t convinced and just would rather not use Chalk Paint® at all if you have to wax, then I’ll share a little trick one of our Poppie’s Famous Repurposing Paint Powder purveyors does. She uses a matte finish spray polyurethane. It’s fast, economical and she states it saves here tons of time.
Yes, there are many alternatives to wax that can be done as mentioned above and Poppie’s works well with all of them. But you will learn that the purpose the piece is intended for will also be a determining factor in what finish is selected in the end.
